If you took a dog training class more than 10 years ago, the odds were overwhelming that you were instructed to use force to train your dog. A dog trainer who acted a lot like an Army drill sergeant yelled out the instructions.

“Dog trainers now use psychological concepts of learning theory,” says Mary Lee Nitschke, a psychology professor at Linfield College and one of the top animal behavior experts in the country. She’s also one of the founding members of the association.

The revolution, Nitschke said, came from observing dogs, rather than just expecting dogs to do what people tell them to do.

Gentle dog training is not a new idea. There are many dog trainers using a gentle approach to teaching a dog. However, it is new for a lot of people. I am curious to see how the test results stand with all dog breeds.

There are some types of dog ,which most breeders would agree with, which need a focused trainer. Sometimes the carrot, on some breeds of dog do not work so well… Or are the dog trainers in need of up dating?

For sure some dog trainers will be skeptical. Time will tell. What do you think?
